GTA 6 might be the most hyped game of all time. It’s expected to set massive new standards that no other title — except perhaps its own sequel — will be able to surpass. The game is poised to break records that could remain untouched for years.
However, until now, no one had ever referred to it as a “AAAA” or “AAAAA” title. Recently, though, a veteran of the gaming industry described it as a “AAAAA game” due to its unprecedented scale and ambition.
For years, everyone assumed that GTA 6 would be a AAA title — but that’s no longer accurate. A game of this magnitude can hardly be classified as merely AAA.
GTA 6 stands as a true giant of the gaming industry. Reportedly, Rockstar is spending an enormous amount of money solely on the game’s water physics. In a recent interview with IGN, Nigel Lowrie, co-founder of Devolver Digital, stated that while the industry often talks about AAA or even AAAA games, GTA 6 deserves an entirely new designation: a “AAAAA game.”
According to Lowrie, its sheer scale and ambition place it in a category of its own — beyond anything we’ve seen before — and he’s absolutely right.
GTA 6 isn’t just another high-budget project. It’s a game so vast and culturally significant that it could reshape the gaming landscape — for better or worse. That’s why it can rightfully be called the world’s first AAAAA game.
As Lowrie explained:
“There are AAA games, there are AAAA games — and I’d say Grand Theft Auto 6 is potentially a AAAAA game. It simply surpasses everything else in terms of scale, scope, cultural impact, and the amount of attention it commands.”
Similarly, in the same interview, Adam Lieb, CEO of the marketing platform Gamesight, noted that GTA 6 has been part of nearly every conversation he’s heard about release dates within the industry.
